In 2002, Mann Deshi Foundation began its bicycle programme. To date, Mann Deshi Foundation has provided more than 9000 bicycles. In an average year more than 100 bicycles are donated to send girls to school. Funding for this programme comes from individuals who donate through GlobalGiving.org.
The program was started because a 14 year old girl approached the Foundation looking for a job during her two-month school vacation. They asked what she would do with the money. She responded, “Next year, I will be going to the 8th grade. But the school is in the next village. It’s pretty far away, so I need to buy a bicycle to keep going to school.”
